I regularly meet business owners that have more than one account for their business on Facebook.

If at any stage you or someone in your organisation set up a profile or friend page for your business, you are in breach of Facebook’s terms of use and this page can be shut down at any time.   On Facebook people have “friends” and business pages have “likes”.  So if your business has “friends” then this is an issue that needs to be addressed.

The most common problems I encounter are:

Businesses that have an old profile (friend) page with the same or a similar name to a new Facebook business page that they are using.   This old profile page is obsolete but may have a few hundred or sometimes a few thousand Facebook “friends”.   These connections are very valuable and need not be lost to the organisation.

Other businesses have obsolete friend pages for their businesses but still use this account to administer their Facebook business page.    This issue here is that if Facebook shut down the businesses old friend page, and there are no other administrators set up for the business page, then there is no way to update the page or to set up new page administrators.

Your website is one of the most powerful tools for marketing your business.  It is the place where potential customers can read, review and purchase your products and services.   However, sometimes small and common mistakes can limit its effectiveness.  Here are the ten of the most common mistakes that we commonly encounter:

There is a common misconception that you have to be advertising on Facebook in order to achieve good reach and what I mean by reach is the number of people or fans that actually see your posts.  The organic reach of a page refers to the number of people who see your posts without you having to pay for it.

The organic reach of your page depends on a number of factors.  First of all – the number of likes your page has.  The more likes or fans (I still prefer the original term :)) a page has the more people are likely to see the posts published by the page.

The engagement levels that you currently have on your page also contributes to the organic reach of your posts.

So what is considered an engagement?   If someone likes, comments, shares or clicks on a post – this is considered an engagement.  In my experience people are quite likely to click on a post to “see more” if some of the text of a post is hidden.  The might not “like”, comment or share the post- but will click the “see more” to read the entire post.  This type of engagement is also  tracked by Facebook .  In my experience this can often be the easiest way to get people to engage.

Performing well in Google is nearly more important than having a good website.  After all, if you have a really good website but it doesn’t perform well in Google – then the traffic will be so low to your site it will be ineffective as a marketing tool.  Businesses need to perform well for searches for products and services they sell rather than just their business name.  If someone googles your business name, chances are they know you.   Whereas if someone searches for what you sell, they are looking to do business and they don’t necessarily know what company they will purchase from.

On the 21st of April last, Google announced that they were rolling out a mobile friendly update.  From this date onwards websites that are not mobile friendly will begin to slip down the google rankings for mobile searches..  Websites that are mobile friendly will benefit from higher rankings and more search traffic.

Websites are deemed to be mobile friendly if text is readable without tapping or zooming, links  are spaced appropriately and it avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.

According to Google, this update affects only search rankings on mobile devices.  So if people are more likely to search for your products and services using a mobile device – then this could have serious consequences for your business.   Consider also that  over 60% of the Irish population has a smart phone, which must translate into billions of searches every year.

The update applies to individual pages on a website not the site in its entirety.   Google has even made it easy to check if your website is considered mobile friendly by providing a mobile friendly test.  You can also get your web developer to check the status of your site using webmaster tools.

If you’re website is a few years old, the chances are it’s not mobile friendly.  Now would be a good time to upgrade your entire site.  Check out our web design packages:)  And remember what makes us different is that we are SEO (search engine optimisation) experts that design websites.  We’ll get you found on Google for all searches.

If you have a relatively new website that is failing the Google mobile test,  your web developer may be able to “turn on” the mobile site functionality for your website.     Even responsive sites that look well on a mobile device can fail the test if the text is too small or the links are too close together.

Canva offer many free backgrounds, layouts, fonts, photo editing tools etc but there are also some PRO options that you may have to pay to use, but they are only around $1 to purchase.
I like to use my own imagery and background designs to create funky design images to use on blogs, social media etc.

Okay  first things first, I’m not referring to sending hundreds of emails using Outlook or Outlook Express (or whatever mail server you’re using). Even if you are smart enough to be using the BCC option.   No – in fact, Email Marketing is much more powerful than that.  And the good news is it’s cheap as chips and very effective.
